“The house was dreary and soaked. The walls were damp, the blankets moist. When sister, brother, and I sat upon the couches, the cushions squished. The dining room chairs were soaked through. Our feet made soft slapping sounds against the floors when we walked. The water was everywhere. The pipes were backed up and so the sinks were all filled with a thin layer of water that would not drain. The toilet bowls did not flush completely. The bathtubs were halfway filled. Sister, brother, and I could not get dry. Everything we touched wet us again.”
