“They were being eaten, first their skin, then the deeper flesh, then the bones, and that which was within the bones. They were turning to ooze. Deep in the ground, all those feet beneath the backyard dirt, our family was become liquid. They were down there sloshing about. It was cold down there. It was colder than they expected.”
