“Brother was filthy with the dead. Their discoloring was upon him. His face was smudged with green and brown. There were deep gray shadows beneath his eyes and when brother rubbed his fingers against them, the colors spread down upon his cheeks. Brother looked skeletal now. He was very thin. I called him for the daily meals but he lagged behind, dragging himself down the stairs, then only eating a few bites before returning to the bodies of grandmother, grandfather, mother, father, and sister. He did not speak to me anymore.”
